Mayor Position

Mayor- Position Description: 

Term: 2 years 

Meetings: Normally held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, plus special meetings as needed. 


Position Overview: The Mayor of Goodview serves as the elected leader of the City Council and a representative of the community. In a weak mayor form of government, the Mayor acts as a voting member of the City Council, presides over meetings, and provide leadership, while administrative authority is shared with the full Council and City staff. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Preside over City Council meeting and maintain order and decorum 
  • Participate as a voting member of the City Council on all matters
  • Help set meeting agendas in coordination with City Staff
  • Attend all regular Council meetings 
  • Attend special meetings, workshops, and emergency sessions as needed
  • Review meeting materials and stay informed on City issues, ordinances and policies
  • Provide leadership and facilitate productive discussion among Council Members
  • Represent the City in intergovernmental relationships and regional collaborations

 

Community Leadership: 

  • Serve as the primary ambassador for the City of Goodview
  • Represent the City at public events, meetings, and official functions
  • Communicate with residents and provide leadership on community issues 
  • Promote transparency, trust, and positive community engagement 

 

Time Commitment: 

  • Regular meetings twice a month
  • Additional time for preparation, meetings, events, and community engagement 

 

Compensation: Mayor compensation is set by City ordinance. Beginning January 1 2027, the Mayor receives $4,800 annually ($400 per month), which represents compensation for all regular and special City Council meetings. 

 

Legal & Eligibility Requirements: 

To serve as Mayor, individuals must meet the following requirements in accordance with Minnesota Law: 

  • Must be eligible to vote in the state of Minnesota
  • Must be at least 21 years of age upon assuming office 
  • Must have maintained residence within the City of Goodview throughout the term of office 
  • Must be a registered voter in the City of Goodview

Ethical & Legal Responsibilities: 

  • Comply with Minnesota Open Meeting Law
  • Adhere to Data Practices laws regarding public information 
  • Avoid conflicts of interest and follow all applicable ethical standards 
  • Take the Oath of Officer prior to assuming duties 
  • Act in the best interest of the City of Goodview and its residents 

Qualifications: 

  • Commitment to public service and the Goodview community
  • Strong leadership and facilitation skills 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Council Members and staff 
  • Effective communication and public engagement skills
